Hi, it's nice to meet you

Whoever you are, whatever you do in your life, there is one thing you share in common with everyone else. At some stage, you were a beginner. From starting to walk to learning to read to going on your first date – there was a moment, a time in your life when you were woefully inexperienced at it. Yes, it often sucked. But there was also the thrill, the novelty, the excitement about starting something never experienced before. So as I embark on my umpteenth hobby experiment, I wonder to myself – why the unchallenged stigma around being a newbie? 

I have the answer before I ask the question, as I am sure everyone else does. It’s the fear of humiliation and embarrassment. That sick feeling that you are the only one who fumbles and looks pathetic and the burning desire to be more like all these experts around you.

Good thing we are sent to the starting line over and over again by forces outside of our control, otherwise we would all go through life as experts in climbing monkey bars, skipping rope, and spinning Beyblades.

So here I am, many years after achieving my Beyblades mastery, embracing this yin-yang situation.  I am going to try kite-surfing this weekend, a paragliding lesson next month and will join a rock climbing gym this year. I might even start some drawing classes. I will probably look like a blundering idiot but I can’t wait to feel that thrill of discovering something new I can do.
